The Power of Movement: Building Strong Bodies and Lifelong Health As we launch this inaugural issue of the Connecticut State Medical Society Magazine, I’m especially delighted—as an orthopaedic surgeon—that our focus is on sports medicine, a field that unites prevention, performance, and lifelong wellness. Sports and physical activity remain some of the most powerful tools we have to promote health. Beyond cardiovascular and mental benefits, weight-bearing exercise is essential for building bone strength, particularly in individuals under the age of 30, when the body achieves its peak bone mass. Encouraging active, well-rounded participation in sports during youth isn’t only about competition—it’s about laying the foundation for stronger bones, healthier joints, and reducing the risk of osteoporosis later in life. In this issue, you’ll find thoughtful articles on the value of multisport participation—reviving the tradition of the three-sport athlete—and on safe return to play after ACL injury, as well as an update on the evolving and vital role of Athletic Trainers in athlete care and injury prevention. And while injuries such as ankle sprains remain the most common across all levels of sport, we are reminded that timely diagnosis and appropriate rehabilitation can make a significant difference in recovery and long-term function. Whether in the clinic, on the field, or in the commu- nity, our shared goal as physicians is to promote safe participation, resilience, and the enduring benefits of movement for people of all ages. I would also like to extend a special thank you to all of the authors who contributed to this inaugural issue. Your time, expertise, and thoughtful perspec- tives have made this publication possible and mean- ingful for CSMS members and readers.
