This graph shows the decrease of athletic trainers in
the state from 2016 to 2022 and increase of
unknown services from data collected through the
ATLAS project. The ATLAS project is a national
data collection overseen by Korey Stringer Institute
to evaluate the athletic training services provided to
secondary schools across the country.
An athletic trainer being in the traditional role
cannot be viewed as a luxury position but a vital and
necessary role for operations. Stakeholders need to be
active in the recruitment and retention of a role that is
non-negotiable to health and safety
standards. Though a lot of this current work is
reactive to the current environment – there needs to
be great intervention to ensure we are ultimately
proactive to a catastrophic event that could have
been avoided if we were proactive to mitigate the
risk of losing the athletic trainer professional
numbers in the state of Connecticut, because as it
has been documented and showcased - the
profession can be complemented but the unique
nature and skillset in a comprehensive nature,
cannot be replaced or substituted.
